2010

Harvest for the Hungry and Kids-for-Kids

The Foundation provided a grant in the amount of $2,000 to help fund both of these ministries.  The Harvest for the Hungry is a Thanksgiving ministry whereas the church opens its doors on Thanksgiving Day to those less fortunate.   In addition, the church cooks for various shelters throughout Northwest Indiana provides Thanksgiving Dinner to well over 300 needy individuals.  Lastly, in its third year, the church "plants" groups of volunteers within each of the AHEPA Senior Citizen buildings and serves Thanksgiving Dinner to those seniors who are staying home for the holiday.  While ensuring that no one goes hungry on this day, the main mission is to ensure that everyone is also provided with love and fellowship.

Kids-for-Kids is a ministry that provides Christmas presents for children to needy families.  This year will provide special challenges as many more families have found themselves displaced and unemployed by the ongoing stagnant economy.

Metropolis of Chicago - Ministry for Special Needs Children

On October 30, 2010, an all day retreat took place at the St. Iakovos Family Retreat Center.  About 20 kids with special needs such as Cerebral Palsy, Autism, and other such disabilities will experience "The Liturgy through your Senses".  This ministry, headed up by Toni Poteres, will provide a one-on-one teaching experience tailored to the needs of each child.  Experienced volunteers will aid Toni in teaching these children all about the Divine Liturgy through the senses of taste, touch, smell, hearing, and sight..  The foundation is proud to underwrite the costs associated with this ministry.  God Bless Toni and the other volunteers for providing this teaching ministry to these most special individuals.

Metropolitan Tsarasios of South America
The foundation provided a grant in the amount of $2000 to Metropolitan Tsarasios to support his ministry.  These funds will go towards education, feeding the hungry, and helping to support the few churches that exist in South America.  May God continue to give Metropolitan Tsarasios the strength and wisdom for the souls entrusted to him.

FOCUS North America
Focus North America serves the hungry, thirsty, lonely, naked, sick, and imprisoned by provided food, occupation, clothing, understanding, and shelter.  FOCUS reaches out to serve those in need by providing aid through its programs and its partners.  They support Orthodox Christian social action ministries, agencies, professionals, and volunteers.

Hellenic Veterans Memorial

A memorial will be built in Norridge Illinois to commemorate all veterans of Hellenic descent.  George and Gust Novak both served in the Army in World War II and will be proudly recognized at this memorial.

 St. Iakovos Family Retreat Center

Now that the land for this Metropolis wide project is paid for, it is time to turn our focus on constructing the infrastructure to house the new Fanari camp, individuals, church groups, and organizations who come and visit.  At the Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago Namesday Celebration held on October 28, 2010, the foundation fulfilled its pledge for the building fund in the amount of $100,000. We hope that our early committment will inspire other Greek Orthodox individuals and organizations to give unselfishly to this most worthy project.

Saints Constantine & Helen Cathedral Greek School

A challenge grant to the PTO was approved for the 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 school year to help fund salaries and other expenses of the school.  The school (voted number 1 in the Chicago Metropolis), provides a Hellenic education which includes language, culture, food, dance, and history.  It is hoped that this grant will help the school grow and flourish.

We were informed by the Greek School PTO President in early October, that the PTO had met its fundraising goal for the year.  As such, the foundation presented the Saints Constantine and Helen church with a check in the amount of $5,000 on October 31, 2010 to match dollar for dollar the PTO fundraising efforts.

Orthodox Missions Mexico - Metropolitan Athenagoras

HIS Eminence approached the Novak Family Foundation regarding the long term and immediate needs.  Most notable, funds are needed to purchase facilities in Pinal del Rio Cuba and Holguiin Cuba to establish an Orthodox ministry in both locations; to complete the purchase of a property in Bogota Columbia which will house an orphanage; to help sustain three schools in Haiti and pay teachers salaries (over forty teachers have not been paid for well over 6 months); and provide funding to translate liturgical and catechetical texts into Spanish.

Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago -
Saint Iakovos Family Retreat Center Land Purchase

This grant was approved to help the Metropolis of Chicago complete the land acquisition portion of the Retreat Center project.  Set on 137 acres in Kenosha County, Wisconsin, the St. Iakovos Retreat Center is a testament to the wonder of the Lord's creation.  Away from worldly cares, this natural setting has 35 acres of original growth woods and hills, a sparkling eight acre lake, streams, tree-lined paths, and a bountiful apple orchard.  There are fenced pastures where horses roam, domesticated animals as well as wild deer and other creatures that dwell on the land.  The retreat center will meet the immediate needs by providing an ideal setting to meet individual, family, group, educational, and church requirements for special outings and retreats.  It truly is a place, for the young and old, to celebrate our Faith and Heritage now and in the years to come.
